Pets and people are family

People love their pets, and there are many, many pets out there. The 2017-18 National Pet Owners Survey by the American Pet Products Association found that 68% of households – that’s nearly 85 million of them – have a pet.

And yet, there are still many places where having a pet at home is a challenge. Many apartments and condos have rules prohibiting pets or making restrictions based on size, age or type of pet.

One of the most common reason people give for surrendering pets to shelters is that they can’t have their pet with them where they plan to live.

As part of Mars Petcare US’s BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ initiative, we hope to help make the case for pet-friendly residential communities and help show the housing industry the value of pet ownership.

Not just pet ownership…RESPONSIBLE pet ownership

A critical step in encouraging more apartments and condos to allow pets is ensuring that those who have pets understand and follow responsible pet ownership practices.

That’s why as another element of our BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ initiative, we’re working to develop educational materials that can help teach pet owners the dos and don’ts that will help their pet succeed.

Examples include reinforcing the importance of cleaning up after one’s pet, helping pet owners learn to socialize pets to improve interactions with others, and encouraging positive training to deal with any challenges along the way.

With some preparation and planning, everyone can be a great pet owner. Before you bring home a new furry family member, sure to select the right pet for your family, find the right veterinarian and prepare your home. Find tips at
